Amazon has released the first official trailer for “The Tender Bar,” the latest directorial effort from George Clooney. It’s a comic drama based on writer J.R. Moehringer’s memoir that was published in 2005, a working-class Long Island boy finds a surrogate father in his book-loving bartender uncle.
The book was a best-seller and Pulitzer Prize winner. “The Tender Bar,” follows the coming-of-age story from Moehringer’s childhood on Long Island through college at Yale and into adulthood. The film stars Ben Affleck, Tye Sheridan, Lily Rabe, Christopher Lloyd, and Daniel Ranieri. It’s set mostly in New York, but many of the scenes were filmed in and around Boston, Beverly, Cambridge, Ipswich, Lowell, Watertown, and other nearby towns.
“The Tender Bar” begins with an introduction to the family of J.R. (Sheridan), who grows up fatherless and is raised by his mother (Lily Rabe) and a kind-hearted Uncle Charlie (Affleck), who is the sharpest and most colorful of an assortment of quirky and demonstrative father figures.
As his mother struggles to provide her son with opportunities denied to her — and to leave the rundown home of her father (Christopher Lloyd). J.R. begins to spend time at the bar where his uncle works as a bartender, and spends most of his time under his uncle’s wing as he longs for a father-son relationship.
It is his uncle who also pushes and introduces J.R. to the world of books, which inspires him to become a writer. J.R. begins to pursue his romantic and professional dreams — with one foot persistently placed in Uncle Charlie’s bar.
The storyline of TTB explores the life of J.R. Moehringer his journey of becoming a writer, the struggles which he and his mom faced, the support of his uncle, and the patrons of the bar where his uncle worked as a bartender.
If the Paul Simon-scored trailer and the title are any indication, “The Tender Bar” appears packed with plenty of scenery-chewing performances and wholesome tears. In short, it sounds like a very familiar, fuzzy kind of family dramedy, tinged with the same sort of growing up experiences that were likely familiar to both Clooney and Affleck.
Still, it’s fun to see the 82-year-old Christopher Lloyd back on screen as the cantankerous grandfather, and early buzz for The Tender Bar has been very kind of Affleck’s performance in particular.
Perhaps the film can aspire to more than simply nostalgia, although the trailer being almost entirely set to Paul Simon’s “Me And Julio Down by the Schoolyard” doesn’t exactly suggest that’s a priority. Regardless, check out wise bartender Affleck below as he slings both beers and aphorisms.
