Time to grab the tissues –The beloved NBC drama “This Is Us”, created by Dan Fogleman, is set to finish with its sixth season. Debuting in 2016 on NBC, the much-loved show has resonated with audiences because of their deep connection with the Pearson family, whether it’s the ultimate dad, Jack (Milo Ventimiglia); the mom who tries her best, Rebecca; or the Big 3 — Randall (Sterling K. Brown), Kevin (Justin Hartley), and Kate (Chrissy Metz) — and their various life paths.
It tackles the overall story of the clan, starting from the parents’ respective childhood leading to their introduction and eventual marriage. It continues past the Big Three’s younger years until the present time where they’re fully-grown adults who also have their own families.
Last season saw the Pearson family grappling with the pandemic the same way many real-life families have. The main plot point of This Is Us season 5 revolved around Kevin and Madison’s relationship, which saw Kevin propose to her after revealing to the family that she is pregnant. Toby (Chris Sullivan) lost his job.
Brothers Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) had a vicious fight, perhaps their worst on the show, but later seemed to make up. Kevin’s baby twins came into the world, and Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby’s adopted daughter was born. Rebecca, meanwhile, continues to deal with her Alzheimer’s diagnosis.
As the season ended, Rebecca apologized to Randall for not opening up to him about his birth parents. Toby took a job that will take him away from Kate and their kids three days a week, while Kevin didn’t get married to Madison (Caitlin Thompson) as planned.
Rebecca told Kevin to build her the house that his dad Jack (Ventimiglia) always wanted to build for her. And in the most shocking moment of the season finale, we see Kevin wearing a tuxedo and preparing for another wedding. However, it is not his wedding, but rather it is Kate’s, presumably to Phillip.
Seeing as season five ended in typically jaw-dropping fashion – hitting fans with yet another major twist at the end of its finale – some big questions now need answering. This farewell season promises to provide a satisfying ending to the Pearson family’s story and give fans proper closure regarding their favorite characters.
It already seems like it will be the most emotional season of the show yet, as it focuses on a tragic storyline about Mandy Moore’s Rebecca, who has been suffering from Alzheimer’s. We’ll see how the Pearsons deal with their mother being unable to remember vital parts of their history while also trying to make new memories and forge new paths. In the flashforwards, we see that Rebecca looks ready to say goodbye with her family – sons, and granddaughters, and brothers-in-law – all gathered around her.
Notably, however, Kate and Miguel are missing from the future scenes. This has led to speculation about whether their characters might have died in the intervening years. That’s plenty of bread crumbs laid out for This Is Us season 6, but fans of the show will know there are some shocking and emotional twists still to come.
