CBS’ United States of Al is an American television sitcom created by David Goetsch and Maria Ferrari that will open its sophomore run with a “powerful” reaction to the unfolding events in Afghanistan, wherein the wake of U.S. troop withdrawals the Taliban military organization has taken over.
The United States of Al, which bowed in April, revolves around the friendship between two men who’ve been through war together. Riley (Young) is a Marine combat veteran who is struggling to readjust to civilian life in Ohio. Almir aka “Al” (Kalyan) is an interpreter from Afghanistan who helped the former while he served in the Marines.
After a long struggle to get him a visa to travel to the United States, Riley welcomes Al as he arrives to start a new life. As they readjust to their normal lives in Columbus, Ohio, Al moves in with Riley and meets his father Art.
He later learns Riley is going through a divorce with his wife Vanessa, who has custody of their only daughter Hazel. Trying to help his friend, who is also dealing with PTSD, Al decides to make it his mission to get Riley and Vanessa back together.
For the most part, the situation in the “United States of Al” has not changed. Al, having recently moved from Afghanistan to America to live with Riley, is still trying his hardest to act as the mediator between Riley and his estranged wife Vanessa. Things have gotten better as communication between the two has improved, but the fact of the matter is that both are still a long way away from getting back together as Al desires.
This is especially true with Vanessa’s boyfriend, Freddy (Brian Thomas Smith), still in the picture. The first season ended with Riley applying for disability at the Department of Veterans Affairs. This may be a crucial step in helping him recover from his traumatic experiences as a soldier in Afghanistan.
In season2, we were stationed at the time of the fall of Kabul when the Taliban forcibly took the city by storm. The episode will follow Al’s concerns about his family as Art, Riley, Lizzie, and Vanessa will stand with him to help his sister Hassina get out of Afghanistan to a safer place.
Al, who has not yet won a home run after leaving Afghanistan, will have a difficult time because of the events taking place in his country. The future can be very certain for Hassan and the whole family because of what happened in Afghanistan, which could affect Al’s life in the US.
In the upcoming episode 11 titled Punch / Musht of season 2, we see Hazel gets in trouble at school and Riley and Vanessa disagree on how to handle the issue.
The series also stars Elizabeth Alderfer as Lizzie, Riley’s sister; Dean Norris as Art, Riley’s father; Kelli Goss as Vanessa, Riley’s ex-wife; and Farrah Mackenzie as Hazel, Riley and Vanessa’s daughter.
