For horror and terrifying folktale lovers, “Unwelcome” is a must-watch movie that is perfectly packed with mystery, home invasion horror, and thriller. Belfast-born filmmaker Jon Wright who is known for his work in Tormented, Grabbers, Robot Overlords, and for these folklores, now directs his upcoming horror film “Unwelcome” based on Irish folklore to explore the lore of malicious, evil, blood-thirsty goblin also known as Redcaps and The Little People. They soak their caps in their victims’ blood as per their name.
However, these weird little people are not entirely native to the Irish legends. Whatever is known about these horrible redcaps comes from the mythology of the Anglo-Scottish border, with the most significant emphasis of their presence primarily demonstrated in the decaying remains of castles.
Jon Wright also writes a screenplay with Mark Stay in this movie. They both had worked together earlier on 2014’s post-apocalyptic “Robot Overlords.” Piers Tempest and Peter Touche handle the production.
This horror movie casts Irish actors, including Hannah John-Kamen from Game of Thrones, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Douglas Booth from Great Expectations, Jupiter Ascending, in leading roles. Colm Meaney from The Snapper, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell from Derry Girls, Kristian Nairn, Niamh Cusack, and Rick Warden appears in a supporting role.
Unwelcome follows a young couple, namely, Maya and Jamie, who move to rural Ireland from London far from the hustle and bustle of city life and spend their lives peacefully. But unfortunately, they soon discover the malevolent, terrible goblins sneaking in the ancient wood at the foot of their garden as they are just ready to settle in.
Being heavily pregnant, Maya has to fight loneliness with the goblins to save their own lives and their unborn child as her relationship with the family she befriended turns sour. Their neighbors have warned and told them that the Redcaps in Irish lore will only come when they ask them to help souls in terrible need of rescue, but it’s pretty difficult to remember that they always have to pay a fair price for their help. Now, it’s suspense who will come to protect her and what she will do to rescue her unborn child.
