Netflix has finally announced its new original real crime documentary series. It is a documentary true-crime drama series produced by Nutopia for the Mon Amour Films association. Roggero di Maggio and Davide Gambino for Mon Amour Films, and Nicola Moody, David Herman, and Jane Root for Nutopia, wrote and produced the series’ story.
The series follows two anti-mafia crusaders in Sicily: journalist and TV host Pino Maniaci, who has spent the past two decades fighting organised crime on his local TV station, and Silvana Saguto, Italy’s most powerful anti-mafia judge.
What is Vendetta: Truth, Lies and the Mafia about?
Maniaci covered organised crime for his local Sicilian TV station Telejato for almost 20 years, while Saguta was president of the Preventive Measures Department and as a result was Italy’s most powerful anti-mafia judge. Sicily’s financial police examined Saguto and her department in 2015.
Maniaci was charged with extortion and defamation multiple times the following year, while Saguto was charged with 39 counts of abuse of office, conspiracy, corruption, forgery, and embezzlement. Maniaci argues that the allegations are a retaliation for exposing corruption, while Saguto claims that she, too, is a victim of a vendetta because she seized billions of dollars from the mafia.
With access to Maniaci and Saguto, their families and legal teams, as well as access to Sicily’s criminal courts and the use of the unseen archive, the series follows both cases to determine the truth.
