When actress Reese Witherspoon adds a book to her list of favorites, you can bet it’ll be a smash, and Delia Owen’s Where the Crawdads Sing is no exception. The coming-of-age novel spent nearly two years on The New York Times bestsellers list, and it’s simple to see why after reading every chapter.
Fans were understandably overjoyed when it was announced that the novel will be adapted into a film. It was chosen as one of Reese’s Book Club recommendations, and the actress has a keen eye for literature that has the potential to become a classic. Big Little Lies, Little Fires Everywhere, and two novels that seem to be on everyone’s reading lists these days — Daisy Jones & The Six and Where the Crawdads Sing — are among her many cinematic adaptations.
Here’s all you need to know about Where the Crawdads Sing now that filming for the highly anticipated film has been completed.
No offense, but what are you waiting for if you haven’t read the Delia Owens novel yet? Part of the reason it’s a top seller is that the coming-of-age story resonates with a wide range of individuals, regardless of their background.
Where Do Crawdads Live? Sing is told by Kya, a little girl who goes by the nickname “Marsh Girl.” She grows up in the 1960s on the Carolina coast in a community called Barkley Cove as a quiet and lonesome character. Her family abandons her when she is just six years old, and Kya, the shack she calls home, and the beauties of the marsh are all she has had for a long time.
Her spiritual bond with the marsh inspires her to become a gifted naturalist, despite the fact that her brilliant mind is frequently neglected by many in town who dismiss her as “swamp trash.” When local heartthrob Chase Andrews is found dead, the town is startled, and it doesn’t take long for people to shift their attention on Kya.
Kya’s story follows her as she grows up in the marsh, falls in love, becomes a suspect in the death of a man who promised her marriage, and eventually becomes a successful published author.
The cast includes some of Hollywood’s emerging stars as well as some fresh, new faces. Fans of Hulu’s Normal People will be pleased to learn that Kya will be played by Daisy Edgar-Jones, a 23-year-old actress.
Harrison Dickinson will play Chase, the hometown hottie, while Taylor John Smith will play Tate Walker, Kya’s one (and only) friend and love interest. Dickinson is recognized for his work in indie films as well as for portraying Prince Phillip in Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. Sharp Objects, which, like Where the Crawdads Sing, was based on a best-selling novel, may be familiar to HBO viewers.
Filming for the film began in April 2021 and was completed in July 2021. Daisy Edgar-Jones, the lead actress, tweeted these behind-the-scenes photos with fans after production wrapped, captioning them: “Wherever the crawdads are dabbling Thank you to the Crawdads crew for working so hard to bring this wonderful story to life. I can’t wait for you to see Kya’s marsh in all of its grandeur. That’s all there is to it. I’ll see you out there.”
Since reading Delia Owens’ story, we’ve been on the edge of our seats, and thankfully, we won’t have to wait much longer. The film Where the Crawdads Sing is set to be released on July 15, 2022.
