The exclusive 15-game “Thursday Night Football” package on Amazon Prime Video will now begin in 2022, a year earlier than initially announced. Amazon made history last month when it agreed to carry a weekly package of National Football League games, making it the first all-streaming service to do so.

For the exclusive rights, the technological behemoth will pay $1 billion per season. Amazon’s arrangement will now last 11 years, matching the duration of Disney, Comcast, ViacomCBS, and Fox’s Sunday and Monday packages. Each season, the Prime Video package includes 15 Thursday night games and one pre-season game.

According to a source familiar with the situation, Amazon had always intended to have an 11-year deal but needed to wait a month for the NFL to conclude its contract with Fox a year earlier.

Amazon’s new record NFL television agreement kicks off next year. Their contract with NBC to produce football broadcasts is expected to be three years long, with an option to extend it to five years. The deal would set in motion a complicated domino effect that would begin with long-time Sunday Night Football producer Fred Gaudelli switching to Thursday night broadcasts.

Al Michaels is likely to leave NBC’s Sunday Night Football broadcast booth at the end of this season. Mike Tirico, the host of Football Night in America, is anticipated to take over as the primary play-by-play announcer on Sunday nights in 2022, replacing Michaels.

A Prime Video subscription costs $8.99 per month, but it’s included with Amazon Prime, which costs $12.99 per month or $119 per year. All Thursday Night games will be carried on local radio stations. Beginning with the 2022 NFL season, NBC is slated to produce Amazon Prime Video’s exclusive Thursday Night Football broadcasts.
