Lisa Joy’s feature directorial debut, Reminiscence, is a 2021 American neo-noir science fiction thriller film written and directed by her. Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson, Thandiwe Newton, Cliff Curtis, Marina de Tavira, and Daniel Wu star in the film, which follows a man who tries to find his missing love using a gadget that can see people’s memories. Jonathan Nolan, Joy’s husband and creative partner, also produces.
What is Reminiscence about?
Nicolas “Nick” Bannister played by the ever so charming Hugh Jackman, who is a rough and lone soldier living in a near-future Miami flooded by rising waves, is a master in a perilous trade: he allows clients to relive whatever memory they wish. When he meets Mae, a strange young woman, his life is turned upside down (Rebecca Ferguson).
What starts out as a simple case of misplaced property quickly turns into a passionate love affair. When a new client’s recollections link Mae to a string of deadly crimes, Bannister is forced to delve into the dark realm of the past to learn the truth about the lady he fell in love with.
We see as Nick ventures into the unknown and into people’s minds to be able to find more about the woman he fell in love with only to find out that she is in fact dead and she died protecting a little boy. The movie ends on a tragic note where we see that he is stuck watching his memories of Mae everyday as he grows old.
Where to watch Reminiscence?
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Reminiscence was originally planned to be released on April 16, 2021, but the slot was taken by Mortal Kombat, and the film was left undated. It was eventually rescheduled for a September 3, 2021 theatrical release in the United States, with an August 25, 2021 foreign theatrical release.
To avoid clashing with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the release date in the United States was pushed back to August 27 and subsequently to August 20.
Warner Bros. Pictures released Reminiscence in the United States on August 20, 2021. On August 11, 2021, it opened at BFI IMAX. Warner Bros. will also stream the picture simultaneously on the HBO Max service in the United States for a month as part of its plans for all of its 2021 releases, after which it will be removed until the normal home media release timetable period.
