What is The Big Leap about?
The show follows a group of varied, down-on-their-luck folks as they strive to change their lives by competing in a possibly life-threatening reality dance competition that culminates in a live performance of Swan Lake. This gang of underdogs makes up for their lack of dancing expertise with their grit, wit, and passion to reinterpret a legendary storey in their own image.
The British reality series, which had a brief run on Channel 4 in 2014 and was carried by Ovation in the United States, followed 18 plus-size amateur dancers as they were recruited to put on a production of Swan Lake over the course of 20 weekends under the tutelage of a former Royal Ballet principal and an artistic director.
Internally, the ballet-themed dramedy, which I hear has gotten a 10-episode order, was a fan favourite. Fox execs reacted positively to the pilot, which has been compared to the network’s reaction to the Glee pilot more than a decade ago. The pickup brings The Big Leap’s six-year odyssey to the big screen to a close.
