When The Blacklist returns in 2022, it will go back in time.
Season 9 of NBC’s The Blacklist will kick off with a Donald Ressler-themed episode (Diego Klattenhoff). The hour, titled “Between Sleep and Awake,” would explore flashbacks to the aftermath of Elizabeth Keen’s death. Below are photographs from EW’s first look at the Ressler-centric episode.
The task team has been split up when the season begins, two years after Elizabeth’s (Megan Boone) death. Apart from the knowledge that Liz’s death had a severe impact on him and that he is still grieving when the team reunites, we don’t know much about Ressler’s time.
When Boone left the show at the conclusion of season 8, the two were just getting started on what many viewers assumed was a love storey.
So far, what we’ve seen has demonstrated just how much the once strait-laced FBI agent has changed over the course of the time leap. Ressler is discovered to be taking drugs and struggling with a new addiction earlier in the season. To keep his drug use from being revealed in a drug test, he enlists the assistance of Agent Parks (Laura Sohn).
“On January 6, the show’s comeback episode focuses his journey over those two years – flashing back in time as he absorbs Liz’s death and fights with addiction,” Klattenhoff adds of the hour. “We’re used to seeing Ressler cool and collected, but this hour is incredibly emotional and illustrates the dreadful route he’s taken as a result of his loss,” says the writer.
The next episode is the latest in a series of The Blacklist episodes that deviate from the show’s usual formula by not featuring a case-of-the-week or a Blacklister for the team to face. Throughout its course, the show has had several unusual episodes centred on various characters, including Ressler, Keen, and Harold Cooper (Harry Lennix).
