Where To Watch “American Experience: Riveted: The History Of Jeans”?

The fascinating and startling story of the iconic American garment, “Riveted: The History of Jeans,” will inaugurate AMERICAN EXPERIENCE’s new Winter-Spring season in February 2022.

They’re more than simply a pair of trousers – America’s tangled past is woven deeply into the indigo fabric, worn by everyone from presidents to supermodels, farmers to rock stars. From slavery to the WILD West, youth culture, the civil rights struggle, rock and roll, hippies, high fashion, and hip-hop, jeans are the fabric on which the history of American culture and politics is printed large.

“Riveted: The History of Jeans,” written, directed, and produced by Anna Lee Strachan and Michael Bicks, and executive produced by Cameo George, premieres Monday, February 7, 2022, 9:00-10:00 p.m ET (check local listings) on PBS, PBS.org, and the PBS Video App’s AMERICAN EXPERIENCE.

Jeans, the ultimate sign of cool, have become a wardrobe essential all over the world, with half of the population wearing them at any given time. “Riveted” delves into the garment’s complex history through interviews with historians, authors, designers, and self-proclaimed “denim heads.”

Levi Strauss, a Bavarian immigrant aiming to earn a fortune selling clothing to the 49ers during the California Gold Rush, is typically credited with the invention of jeans. A half-century before Strauss, enslaved people in the American South wore a precursor of denim made from a coarse fiber known as “slave cloth.”

The indigo plant was used in a laborious dyeing procedure to give jeans their blue color. Eliza Lucas, the daughter of a colonial governor in the 18th century, has traditionally been recognized for launching the southern economy with indigo manufacturing. The West African enslaved people, whose important skills for producing, processing, and dyeing the plant had been brought with them, are left out of this story.

Though Levi Strauss is widely credited with “inventing” blue jeans, “Riveted” tells the story of Jacob Davis, who strengthened the pants with copper rivets. By the 1930s, this invention had generated a garment that was so durable that it was worn by practically all-American workmen.
