There are various reasons to be excited about the new television series Around the World in 80 Days, which will air later this year. The series stars David Tennant (Good Omens) as English gentleman-turned-adventurer Phileas Fogg, and is based on Jules Verne’s well-known novel of the same name.
Plot- Phileas Fogg, a wealthy Victorian eccentric, wagers that he can round the globe in 80 days in Verne’s 1872 storey. Passepartout, Fogg’s quick-thinking valet, joins him on the perilous expedition. Along the way, a Scotland Yard detective named Fix foils their plans, believing Fogg has robbed the Bank of England. Verne’s storey is now possible, with the construction of both America’s transcontinental railroad and the Suez Canal in 1869.
Fogg’s travelling companions are French servant Jean Passepartout and budding journalist Abigail “Fix” Fortescue, played by Ibrahim Koma (As Far As I Can Walk) and Leonie Benesch (Howards End, The Crown).
Passepartout is a counterpoint to Fogg’s demeanour; he is a rough, well-traveled man. (“Passe-partout” means “everywhere” in French.) Ms. “Fix” is determined to succeed professionally in a man’s world and break out from her newspaper magnate father’s shadow. Jason Watkins (The Crown) plays newspaper publisher Bernard Fortescue, and Peter Sullivan (Poldark) as Fogg’s old adversary Nyle Bellamy.
