Christmas at the Ranch, directed by Christin Baker, is a delightful holiday romance set in the traditional farmstead in peril subgenre. Haley (Laur Allen) works for a San Francisco start-up company as a vice president of something.
They’re spending their holiday season dealing with business social media crises and preparing for a big presentation. Her brother Charles (Archie Kao) finally reaches Haley to inform her that Meemaw (Lindsay Wagner), the woman who reared them, is about to lose the family ranch to the bank.
Kate (Amanda Righetti), a lonely ranch hand, tells her allegorical horse how passionately she loves the animals and the earth, and how hard she works to protect them. She even improved the ranch’s Christmas hayride, but the cruel, old, affluent ranchers Burt (Marvin E West) and Burt Jr. undercut her efforts (James David West).
They’re attempting to purchase Meemaw’s hayride and have established their own hayride closer to town. Haley unwillingly comes to the country to see what she can do, expecting to find the shambles she believes Kate made of her childhood home. Haley discovers a cute cowgirl on a dating app who offers to meet her while sleeping at a motel.
Meanwhile, Kate uses a dating app to agree to meet with a cute out-of-towner, who is just a split-screen away. The possible hook-up fizzles out since neither uses their true names, and the cowgirl can’t get her head around the importance of a social media emergency for city mouse vs. country mouse reasons. When Haley arrives at the ranch the next day to meet with Charles and Meemaw, she discovers that the dating app cowgirl is Kate. They start bickering, leaving no clear path forward to save the ranch or acknowledge their simmering love for each other. To save the day and bring these two girls together, it will need a Christmas miracle.
Corporate giants are presented as villains, sabotaging little enterprises with their vast financial resources. This subgenre has a foundation of long-term prosperity, where it is assumed that a creative dreamer with little deserves a fair shot at maintaining their business in a free market.
It’s a matter of extreme eagerness that we have to wait until Christmas for cinematic messages like these, but I’m grateful we have them at all. In addition, rural Americans are fetishized as objects of desire in homestead in peril photographs. The country person is perceived as having a stronger connection to nature’s straightforward power, which always wins over the latte-sipping city slicker’s heart.
Haley wishes for a companion that is capable of making a fire out of nothing, as this shows they can look after you in any situation. Outside of Westerns, it’s difficult to think of another genre that gives rural America such narrative weight.
