So, this house is packed with social media stars in their twenties, many of whom are chatting about their lives and aspiring to be as famous and well-known as A-list celebs. Consider a lot of drama, high-school drama, and meaningless drama, and you’ll have a good idea of what to expect from this series. They are living the high life in a home in California, even if they don’t realise it at times. The money earned by the Hype House team on brand partnerships is utilised to pay rent and other household obligations, demonstrating that their lives are truly dependent on their viewers/fans.
This series explores the pressures of online, social-media celebrity through confessions and fly-on-the-wall type videography which is both eye-opening and fascinating. If you want to learn more about social media influence, this is a good video to watch. This is not the series for you if you are not interested in social media or the world of influencers. You’ll find it irritating, meaningless, and justification for some people’s existence and attempt to be “famous.”
In our opinion, this is a sad time for artists since social media has so much power and influence over their careers. However, those that take advantage of it and make it “huge” should be commended. The house is full of laughter, but there are also some serious, melancholy, and sorrowful moments.
We felt for Chase Hudson when she stated, “If you get cancelled for something, that’s what you’re known for for the rest of your life” – social media is currently the life or death of someone’s job, and you can see the pressure they can put on themselves to please their following. The danger of losing work and fans turning against them during quarantine is a major issue. I feel terrible for them because their lives have a dark, lonely aspect to them – clearly, money and celebrity do not purchase happiness and peace of mind.
Many of these “stars” are utilising social media as a stepping stone to other jobs, such as singer, model, or actor/actress, so it’s fascinating to observe how their careers have progressed and continue to progress.
Overall, this is a self-indulgent show with a lot of drama, aimed towards younger people, and including TikTok celebrities and influencers. You can follow them on TikTok if you want to, and they certainly want you to. The concept of their becoming as well-known as “A-List” celebrities is unrealistic, as I doubt their careers will last, and while they may influence others, they do not inspire.
