The series Inventing Anna is about Anna Delvey, a well-known con artist who defrauded New York City’s elite out of hundreds of millions of dollars.
In 2018, New York magazine released a piece on the Russian native, who in the mid-2010s pretended to be a wealthy German heiress with a $67 million trust fund in order to infiltrate the city’s wealthiest neighborhoods.
The scam artist, whose real name is Anna Sorokin, was attempting to raise funding for a posh art club she planned to open. Over the course of a 10-month period, she defrauded her friends and New York businesses of $275,000 in total.
The limited series, which is based on the original piece, will look at how the European got away with her get-rich scheme for so long – and how she was caught. Delvey was found guilty of four charges of stealing services, three counts of grand larceny, and one count of attempted grand larceny by a Manhattan jury in April 2019. Following a month-long trial, she was sentenced to a minimum of four years in jail in May, during which she solicited the help of a stylist to maintain her dazzling appearance in court.
Delvey was freed in February 2021 after nearly two years in a New York state jail, and she promptly returned to Instagram to inform her followers that she was “working on a little something” special for them.
Her use of social media after she was released from prison put her in the custody of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement in April 2021, with authorities saying that her Instagram post demonstrated a lack of contrition for her actions. She was on the verge of deportation at the time.
