Where To Watch “Jeen-Yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy”?

Jeen-yuhs: The Kanye West Trilogy is at odds with itself. The three-part documentary, which premiered its first half this weekend at the virtual Sundance Film Festival and will be released on Netflix on successive Wednesdays beginning February 16, aims to portray Kanye West’s swirling paradoxes, a pop-culture phenomenon who defies categorization. Are you a rapper or a producer? Is it better to be a musician or a fashion designer? Which is better: a Benz or a backpack? Is it Yeezus or Ye? West’s unwillingness to choose a single persona may be his greatest artistic skill.

So it’s only natural that a film that unabashedly glorifies such a complex figure would struggle to make sense of its own contradictions. Clarence “Coodie” Simmons, who would later direct the video for West’s breakthrough single “Through the Wire” with jeen-yuhs co-director Chike Ozah, met West at a birthday party for producer Jermaine Dupri in 1998 and agreed to follow the ambitious young beatmaker around in the hopes of creating a Hoop Dreams-style account of an aspiring rapper with big dreams. Fortunately for Coodie and Chike, West possessed the talent to back up his words.

In important moments of diaristic confession, Coodie, who was both a stand-up comedian and the host of a local Chicago hip-hop programme called Channel Zero, serves as the narrator of jeen-yuhs, comparing his own life experience with West’s trip. Coodie was more than a fly on the wall throughout the early phases of West’s rise to power.

He was a collaborator in the creative process. This close approach lends the footage an unusual intimacy—you feel like you’re right there in the studio with West when he’s performing songs for Scarface or demoing “Slow Jamz” with Jamie Foxx—but it also complicates the film’s more difficult later scenes.

The first two segments of jeen-yuhs, named “VISION” and “PURPOSE,” are gripping viewing for even casual fans of West’s music. West earned mainstream success as a producer after rising through the ranks in Chicago, landing multiple tracks on Jay-The Z’s Blueprint in 2001. He, on the other hand, aspired to be considered seriously as a rapper.

Coodie’s roving camera follows West as he haunts the corridors of Jay-label Z’s Roc-A-Fella in search of a record deal, then follows him home to Chicago, where he feuds with fellow producer Dug Infinite and visits his mother Donda for a casual hang and pep talk. West’s yearning for artistic legitimacy and financial success is palpable in these scenes, and his obvious enthusiasm for the project is contagious.
