Mr. Saturday Night is a 1992 American comedy-drama film that marks Billy Crystal’s directorial debut.
It tells the story of Buddy Young Jr., a stand-up comedian, and his rise and fall. Babaloo Mandel and Lowell Ganz developed the screenplay, which Crystal produced and co-authored. It was shot between November 1991 and March 1992, and Columbia Pictures released it on September 23, 1992. David Paymer, who co-starred in the film, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Buddy Young Jr., a stand-up comedian, became a television sensation with the support of his brother and manager, Stan, but alienated many of his closest friends when his career faded.
The brothers are seen in a sequence of flashbacks entertaining their family in the living room when they were younger. Buddy the older continues his comic career in the Catskills, where he meets Elaine, his future wife.
Buddy’s ego develops as he as a celebrity grows. With his own Saturday night television show, he makes it big. Buddy, despite his brother’s cautions, uses foul material on the air, jeopardising him his programme and starting his career downhill. When he tried to do a stand-up routine on the Ed Sullivan programme after the Beatles and insulted a lot of people, his career was officially finished.
