Riverdale, which has been off our television screens for months, is set to return in just over a month for its sixth season on The CW. The episodes will be based on the five-part “Rivervale” narrative, which took a spooky and otherworldly perspective to the Archie Comics universe. When these new episodes air, they will mark the series’ first move to Sundays, after spending much of its run in a Wednesday or Tuesday time slot. “Rivervale” is the sixth season’s opening arc, a five-week “oversized” run that is “firmly in the horror genre,” according to showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, and features Kiernan Shipka resuming her role as Sabrina Spellman. Aguirre-Sacasa announced that Rivervale is in-canon and part of the show’s continuity in a post-finale appearance on the podcast Riverdale After Dark.
Synopsis: RIVERDALE’s sixth season kicks off with a special five-episode event storyline named “RIVERVALE.” Season six picks off where season five left off, with Archie (KJ Apa) and Betty (Lili Reinhart) deciding to give their romantic connection another go, just as Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos) was ready to detonate a bomb under Archie’s bed.
Surprisingly, the bomb doesn’t seem to go off, and when Archie and Betty wake up the next morning, they’re in Rivervale, their lives in Riverdale a distant memory. It’s hard to believe, but Rivervale is significantly darker and creepier than Riverdale.
There are ghosts, curses, witches, demons, human sacrifices, and special guest stars galore, including Sabrina Spellman (guest star Kiernan Shipka), everyone’s favorite twenty-something witch! What brought our protagonists to Rivervale? And what is Rivervale, exactly? Is there a parallel universe? Is it possible to travel to another dimension? Limbo? Is Archie’s coma a dream? “The Jughead Paradox,” the hundredth episode of RIVERDALE, will reveal the enigma.
