The trailer for the new season of State of the Union has been released by SundanceTV. In 2019, it almost seemed like a novelty to check in on Rosamund Pike and Chris O’Dowd for 10 minutes at a time, especially because they were playing a couple that was rethinking their marriage. Three years later, the show’s creators are bringing it all back for a whole new on-screen partnership, each with their own set of problems.
The show’s renewal was announced in January, but now is your first chance to see what Season 2 has in store for the anthology series. Ellen and Scott, played by Patricia Clarkson and Brendan Gleeson, are a married couple who are sorting out more than just their divergent political ideas as they prepare for their weekly counseling sessions.
Rosamund Pike and Chris O’Dowd debated each other in a pub in the first season, expressing their difficulties with one another. Patricia Clarkson and Brendan Gleeson will play Ellen and Scott in the next season, a thirty-year-married couple who spend ten minutes before their therapy session at a coffee shop.
Jay (Esco Jouléy), the coffee shop attendant who challenges their worldview, keeps a careful eye on them and occasionally interacts with them. Clarkson and Gleeson will chat about everything in the trailer, including living in your early sixties, keeping up with the world’s changes, sex, monogamy, pronouns, and anything else that can fit into ten-minute conversations.
State of the Union’s debut season won three Emmys in 2019, including Outstanding Short Form Comedy or Drama Series. All episodes are written by best-selling author and screenwriter Nick Hornby (High Fidelity, About a Boy), with two-time Oscar nominee Stephen Frears (The Queen, Philomena) directing. The duo, who are known for their humor and charisma, will bring this combination to the second season of State of the Union.
