The Tragedy of Macbeth is a 2021 American drama film directed by Joel Coen and based on William Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth. It’s the first time one of the Coen brothers has directed a picture without the cooperation of the other. The film stars Denzel Washington, Frances McDormand, Bertie Carvel, Alex Hassell, Corey Hawkins, Harry Melling, and Brendan Gleeson, and was also produced by her.
Plot- What is the point of making yet another Macbeth film? Justin Kurzel’s large realist version, starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, was released not long ago. Well, if the picture is as fascinating and visually stunning as this, there’s always a purpose. For the first time, director Joel Coen has created a stark monochrome nightmare that has been refrigerated to an icy coldness.
It’s a version that returns us to Shakespeare’s language by framing the drama in dramatic, stylized ways: an agoraphobic ordeal during which bodies and features arise with tin-tack sharpness out of the creamy-white fog. Coen’s visual conceits are paying homage to Kurosawa and Welles, with some German expressionist shadows, and also the film appears to be against the law drama from the 1930s or 1940s – but not in an interpretative manner.
Due to Bruno Delbonnel’s pellucid and austere cinematography and Stefan Dechant’s magnificent production design, Macbeth’s castle is imagined as an enormous, rectilinear modernist house, with chilly courtyards bounded by vast vertiginous walls and corridors that stretch like some style of open-plan cellblock.
Surprisingly, there’s no feeling of how it seems from the outside: we are constantly submerged in its Escher-like craziness, with battlements that continue into the fog indefinitely. In many respects, this Macbeth resembles the person Who Wasn’t There, a black-and-white criminal thriller starring Frances McDormand because the barber’s wife, who, like Lady Macbeth, broods and suffers.
And, of course, McDormand is Lady Macbeth in this production, a role she was born for, bringing a hard-won domestic authority and her own brand of military resolution to the plot to assassinate King Duncan.
