The series, which stars Ansel Elgort and is based on a true tale, follows a young American journalist who is assigned to document the daily activities of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and ends up unearthing alarming evidence of corruption in the Vice squad. On April 7, the series will launch exclusively on HBO Max.
Jake Adelstein, played by Ansel Elgort, is seen on a bus with Ken Watanabe, who plays Hiroto Katagiri, an investigator in the organized crime division, in the first-look photograph. Jake appears (and likely feels) like a fish out of water in many ways because they’re both surrounded by full-body armored cops.
After a long road to completion, Tokyo Vice will finally hit our screens in early April. The series’ development was halted in early 2020 due to COVID regulations. However, as production resumed, the series found a Japanese co-producing partner in WOWOW, a premium pay-TV channel that purchased the series’ exhibition rights throughout Japan.
Michael Mann, a famous director, and four-time Academy Award contender directed the pilot of Tokyo Vice. Mann is recognized for exposing police corruption in many of his films, including Heat and Miami Vice in 2006. The new series is created and written by J.T. Rogers, a playwright who previously adapted his own play Oslo for the screen. Tokyo Vice was based on journalist Jake Adelstein’s memoir of the same name, which was played in the film by Ansel Elgort.
In addition to Elgort and Watanabe, the cast of Tokyo Vice includes Academy Award contender Rinko Kikuchi (Pacific Rim: Uprising), Rachel Keller (FX’s Legion), Ella Rumpf (Raw), Hideaki Ito (Lesson of the Evil), Sho Kasamatsu (The Naked Director), and music star Tomohisa Yamashita (The Head).

On April 7, the series will premiere on the streaming service HBO max. The first three episodes of Tokyo Vice will air on HBO Max on April 7, followed by two episodes every week thereafter.
HBO Max’s basic, ad-free edition costs $14.99 per month or $149.99 per year, while the ad-supported version costs $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year, and has been accessible since May 2020. While both plans feature a lot of the same content, there are some key differences in terms of what’s included and the overall viewing experience (remember, the less expensive subscription has commercial breaks), which we’ll go over in-depth.
