The third season of Andscape’s critically acclaimed Why Not Us television series, Southern Dance, which is executive produced by NBA All-Star and businessman Chris Paul, will debut on Thursday, August 11, only on ESPN+. Fans will get a behind-the-scenes look at Southern University’s dance company, the Dancing Dolls, in the new eight-episode ESPN+ Original.
The Dolls have been the gold standard for collegiate dance lines all around the country for more than 50 years. The Human Jukebox, the school’s marching band, provides power for the Dancing Dolls, who push the boundaries with each performance by developing original choreography from their varied dance backgrounds.
The Dolls advance culture via their talent and creativity, serving as role models in their communities and serving as examples of what it means to be a powerful Black woman outside of the field.
Why Not Us: Southern Dance will investigate the distinctive culture, experiences, and difficulties of an HBCU athletic program, much like the first two seasons of Why Not Us, which followed the FAMU football team and the men’s football teams from North Carolina Central and North Carolina Central, respectively.
The Dolls manage the rigors of practice, classes, and honoring the heritage of the Forever Dolls that came before them under the guidance of the alluring Dr. Akai Smith. The Fabulous Dancing Dolls of Southern University, a group of dancers from various parts of the nation, develop as artists, scholars, and people.
Why Not Us: Southern Dance is created by Roadside Entertainment, Paul’s Ohh Dip!!! Productions, and ESPN+ and is presented by Andscape. The Why Not Us television series emphasizes the values of being an HBCU student and student-athlete. The series emphasizes the value of these exceptional institutions and those students who have accomplished more with less.
Before being chosen fourth overall in the 2005 NBA Draft, Paul graduated from Wake Forest University early. He is currently pursuing his degree at Winston-Salem State University. He has long been a proponent of HBCUs, helping with HBCU voting campaigns and founding The Mischief for Change Scholarship, a college scholarship fund with a $1 million commitment over the following five years for students attending HBCUs, in collaboration with Sour Patch Kids and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. He will host the Boost Mobile HBCU Tip-Off and the Boost Mobile HBCU Challenge in November, the second annual circuit of two HBCU events, in association with The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Paul was been named to the advisory council for historically black colleges and universities under President Biden.
Paul collaborated with Harvard Business School to offer its curriculum in entertainment, media, and sports to a few HBCUs in order to create a pipeline for students interested in working in those fields.
