Kevin Kölsch’s 2019 Pet Semetary was the second movie about Stephen King’s 1983 novel of the same name, the first one being a 1989 movie. Although it can be described as a slow movie and occasionally relied on jump scares, the atmosphere, tone and cast performances were commendable. Paramount studios have just announced what we think is a prequel to the 2019 movie, chalked out to release exclusively on the Paramount+ streaming platform. Jeff Buhler, the writer behind the 2019 movie, will be returning to write the 2021 version.
The story so far
The 2019 movie, was about Dr. Louis Creed, played by Jason Clarke who moved to a small town in Maine called Ludlow with his family and cat. On Halloween, in an unfortunate traffic accident, the cat is killed by a truck. They bury the cat in an ancient burial ground, and to their surprise, the cat returns alive the next day, but with a new, seemingly evil personality. They find out that the specific burial ground has the power to bring the dead back to life, and a spirit called Wendigo exists there. As the events unfold, the family cannot help but get trapped in a maze of events that keep leading them right back to that cemetery, but whatever comes back from there never comes back the same.

A prequel in the works within 2 years of the original release
Although made within a budget of $21 million, the film made gross earnings of $113 million, which is why we think the studio was so quick to jump at the idea of making another movie in what we can call a franchise now. No plot details are known, but it is expected to be an origin story, which is why we think it would be a prequel and not a continuation of the 2019 movie. Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing the new movie.
