The 2001 sci-fi fantasy film ‘Donnie Darko’ gave fans of the genre a remarkable 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, and 12 seconds cramped into 1 hour 48 minutes. The film was directed by Richard Kelly and told the story of a shy and awkward seeming boy named Donnie and his friend in a bunny costume named Frank as they go on various adventures. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal (‘Nightcrawler,’ 2014), Drew Barrymore (‘Charlie’s Angels,’ 2000), Maggie Gyllenhaal (‘The Dark Knight,’ 2008), and Seth Rogen (‘Neighbors,’ 2014). Even today, ‘Donnie Darko’ sits at a solid 8.1 rating on IMDb, and now, director Kelly is working on a new sequel for the film.
The sequel that never was
Although ‘Donnie Darko’ did get a sequel in 2009 titled S Darko, it was directed by Chris Fisher instead of Richard Kelly himself and had relatively low ratings (3.6 on IMDb). It stars Daveigh Chase, a part of the original film, but much of the other cast is missing. The plot, too, is very unlike the 2001 film. This sequel follows two best friends that fight their way through strange happenings after their car faces a breakdown during a road trip. Very few fans are even aware that this film exists and hence have been asking for a sequel for quite some time.

Fans already speculating what this new sequel will bring to the table
In an interview with Coming Soon, director Kelly made his plans clear about working on a new sequel with the same title as the original film and completing a large part of said project. It is possible that after the 2009 failure, this new sequel will take the story back to its roots and perhaps even see some of the original cast return. Kelly has previously worked on some of the most famous films, such as Robin Williams’ starrer ‘World’s Greatest Dad,’ (2009) and Sarah Michelle Geller starrer ‘Southland Tales’ (2006).
