Horror comedy Gremlins, directed by Joe Dante, released nearly thirty-six years ago but still lives in many hearts. With a 7.3 rating on IMDb and 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, this film even bagged a sequel in 1990, titled Gremlins II: The New Batch, directed by Dante as well. Now, after so many years, another addition is to be made to the Gremlin franchise with HBO’s animated show Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai. The original film tells the story of a salesman who, to find his son a Christmas present, goes the extra length and purchases a “mogwai” that h was warned against. Soon, things go sideways, and the result? A gang of Gremlins was terrorising the whole town on the eve of Christmas. The second movie follows Gizmo the Gremlin on his adventures this time around. He and his gang take over skycrapers in New York City.

First announced in 2019, Secrets of the Mogwai will be set in a 1920s Shanghai and follow Mr. Luke’s origin story. Battling and playing around with colourful monsters from the folklore of China, ten-year-old Sam and teenager Elle will try and reunite Gizmo with his family, but little do they know that a powerful businessman has unleashed a hellish army of evil Gremlins in order to capture the treasure this trio possesses. In 2020, directed Joe Dante told Daily Dead that animation might be the best route for the franchise as it can help explore much potential as it allows one to get away with more fiction and fantasy than live action could.

An international cast full of much potential
Secrets of the Mogwai, a prequel to the 1984 film, will be developed by Tze Chun and produced by Warner Bros. Animation. The cast includes Gabriel Neveah Green (Danger Force, 2020), James Hong (Big Trouble in Little China, 1986), AJ LoCascio (The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special, 2020), Matthew Rhys (A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood, 2019), Isaac Wang (, BD Wong as well as Ming-Na Wen.
