Commotion Regarding ‘The Sandman’s Casting For John Constantine Causes Gaiman Himself To Clear Things Up

After recently releasing an initial cast list for the upcoming Netflix show ‘The Sandman’, makers are now faced with more questions from curious fans. ‘The Sandman’, based on the comics by the same name, is set to release later this year. Written by Neil Gaiman and published by DC Comics, ‘The Sandman’ tells the story of a sandman named Dream who goes on a quest to restore what was once his home after getting out of captivity that lasted seventy years. The recently released cast list being the first piece of concrete information fans could get their hands on, has made quite the buzz, but a little more has been revealed about the same by Gaiman himself.

What caused all of this hullabaloo?

An article seemed to wrongly report that Taron Egerton (‘Rocketman’, 2019) will play Constantine’s role of John Constantine which led to quite a lot of commotion considering how fans must have been expecting to see Matt Ryan play this role. Ryan has earlier played Constantine’s role enough for fans to associate no one but him with the character. A frustrated fan took to Twitter to express he disappoints for the same, and Gaiman responded, asking him and others not fall prey to any misinformation as no official sources have revealed Constantine’s casting yet. It is possible that whoever wrote the article that misreported Egerton being cast as Constantine was confused as he has previously upheld the role in ‘The Sandman’ audiobooks.

    Who is John Constantine?

The whole thing seems to have cleared up by Gaiman’s tweet, but one thing that people have pointed out is that Gaiman might not have commented on Ryan being cast for the role, but he has not shot down any rumours for the same either. John Constantine is a sorcerer and an occult detective who, like Dream, is an anti-hero. Although he is known as the perpetually-smoking, cynical bad guy, he is driven by passion and his heart’s goowill, making him an anti-hero rather than a villain. He helps Dream in the initial stages of his quest to retrieve his tools. ‘The Sandman’ is being developed by Allen Heinberg, who will also serve as the show’s executive producer along with Gaiman and Daid S Goyer.
