Roland Emmerich Would Like To Direct Independence Day 3 If Given The Chance By Disney

Director Roland Emmerich, who directed Independence Day 1 and 2, still wants to film a third instalment, which could be a movie or a television series, and believes Disney is the best choice for it.

Independence Day 3 is still a possibility, as Roland Emmerich hopes to return to the sci-fi genre for a third chapter. Emmerich returned to direct Independence Day: Resurgence in 2016 after directing the first Independence Day in 1996. Following Disney’s takeover of 20th Century Fox, there has been no indication of a sequel being made anytime soon, possibly due to the poor reception to Resurgence.

Emmerich believes that five years after the release of the second film is the ideal moment to continue the plot. He mentions that Disney now has a streaming service, hinting that it could be a good venue to release the film if the studio is unwilling to release it theatrically. Emmerich goes on to say that it doesn’t have to be a movie; a TV series based on the holiday may also work. In any case,he wants to see the plot continue.

In 1996, the first Independence Day was a huge hit, grossing over $817 million dollars. Emmerich directed the film, which he also co-wrote with Dean Devlin and produced. Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Mary McDonnell, Judd Hirsch, Margaret Colin, and Randy Quaid feature in the film, which follows a group of humans organising a counter-attack on an invading extraterrestrial civilization on July 4th.

Independence Day: Resurgence, directed by Emmerich, was co-written by Devlin, James A. Woods, Nicolas Wright, and James Vanderbilt. Smith’s role was controversially killed off in the sequel, albeit it did bring back some familiar faces like Goldblum and Pullman. The film did not perform well, grossing less than $400 million on a $165 million budget and garnering a dismal critical response.

Thus, Independence Day 3 may or may not happen, but The Walt Disney Company does not appear to be in any hurry to order its production at this moment.
