In 1961, directors Clyde Geronimi, Hamilton Luske and Wolfgang Reitherman came together to bring Dodie Smith’s One Hundred and One Dalmatians through a Walt Disney animated film of the same name. This adventure comedy told the story of a litter Dalmatian puppies are stolen by the iconic villain Cruella de Vil to use them as fur coat. Although these puppies; parents set out to save their seventeen babies, they end up rescuing many more along the way and the final count they bring home is a hundred and one black and white furballs.
There is more to Cruella than just her puppy-stealing tendencies
A new live-action musical from the 101 Dalmatians franchise is going to make its way to Disney+ on the 28th of May this year, and the limelight here will be on Cruella and her origins. The role will be fulfilled by none other than award-winning actor Emma Stone, known for La La Land, Zombieland, The Help, Birdman, Gangster Squad and many more excellent films. From the looks of the trailer, this film may be something new that Disney will be trying its hand at as Stone gives off Harley Quinn vibes playing this deranged woman who seems to actually enjoy being bad. Set in 1970s London, this film will follow the notorious, but very fashionable, Cruella through her early years.
A very fashionable trailer
The trailer begins with a look at Cruella while she still had red hair and before she changed it to the iconic half black, half white that she is known for. A rags to riches story of sorts will follow her through her endeavours as she tries anything possible to get somewhere in life, not having a care in the world about what others think of her. From drinking liquor she is not supposed to, to stealing the show at a party that she is not supposed to and even hot-wiring a car, she is surely not supposed to, this trailer is full of young ambition and rebel. With her fashion on point and the need to simply enjoy watching the world burn (perhaps literally), Cruella certainly knows how to make a statement.
