The Exorcist Sequel Rests On David Gordon Green

In August of last year, Morgan Creek Entertainment announced a revival of the 1973 horror classic The Exorcist. Morgan Creek had planned to release the presently untitled Exorcist film in 2021, but the response they experienced after its announcement had them walking carefully. In December 2020, David Gordon Green was named as the director, with the picture being postponed until 2022. Green has now clarified that the picture will be a direct sequel to the original, rather than a complete reboot, as had been speculated previously.

The script for The Exorcist Reboot has been completed, and it does not appear to be a complete retcon of the original Exorcist. He’s even acknowledged The Exorcist’s later sequels. Morgan Creek has previously stated that they will never remake The Exorcist, and the next reboot appears to follow suit. He made no mention of the eponymous television series, which aired on Fox for two seasons from 2016 to 2017 before being cancelled. The show was a straight sequel to the 1973 blockbuster, and it ignored the subsequent sequels to the film.

It’s a fun legacy to be a part of, and hopefully we’ll be able to get started on it soon, Green said. Rather than impulsive screenwriting, that one requires a lot of research. That’s the topic on which you can speak read, discuss, and interview a lot of people. That original movie had such a tremendous sincerity about it.

David Gordon Green appears to be a huge fan of The Exorcist and is doing his best to keep the original’s reputation alive. Blumhouse and Morgan Creek will collaborate on the reboot cum sequel.
